Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of a sleep disorder begins with a medical history and physical exam. If an underlying medical condition is suspected, further tests such as blood tests may need to be performed.

A sleep study, called a polysomnogram (also know as PSG or sleep test), may be recommended. This test is non-invasive, painless, and should not last more than a couple of nights. This test measures the following body functions during sleep such as but not limited to:

  • Brain activity

  • Airflow and breathing

  • Blood oxygen levels

  • Blood pressure and heart rate

  • Rapid eye movement

  • Muscle movement

  • Contact your physician or sleep center to get a complete list of body functions measured.

Other test that may be performed are:

  • A multiple sleep latency test measures the speed of falling asleep

  • An arterial blood gas test may also be performed to check levels of carbon dioxide and oxygen

  • Psychological evaluation

  • Contact us to get a complete list of body functions measured.
